EDIT: Check out my updated article for an easier Windows ProRes coding course.

Apple’s ProRes codec is a popular disc that many customers request. Until recently, it was not possible to subscribe to In prores Windows, which meant buying a Mac or trying to convince a customer to accept a different format (like a better DNxHD). Thanks to the free and open source catalog of FFmpeg video codecs, you can now easily convertA large number of codecs in Apple ProRes for Windows, Linux and Unix. The free Cinec program for Windows was recently released. The device is extremely easy to use yet highly flexible, and supports ProRes development capabilities with support for 4444, 422 HQ, Standard, LT, Proxy, and alternative codecs are also available. This is a one-time batch processing, which makes it easy to create a large number of files at the same time. That being said, I’ve had occasional problems with the program encoding strange things, and often ended up doing the conversion manually. Here are the instructions for doing this manual ProrRes encoding in a computer window.

    Manually Encode ProRes

Download the latest version of ffmpeg from the Windows databases. Chances are your computer is now 64-bit and you need the latest static 64-bit version. If you’re still not sure if your computer is 32-bit or 64-bit, download the 32-ounce version.

Unzip the downloaded files. Create a directory a at the root of the actual drive (for easy access) and name it “ffmpeg”. Go to this unzipped folder, click and press bin. There are three .exe files inside, copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) them directly into the newly created ffmpeg folder.

On the command line, navigate to the drive containing your ffmpeg folder. By default, they will download where Windows is installed, but in your user folder. To get the build time of root (usually c:), type: cd c: Once you’ve created the ffmpeg folder on your source drive, you’re ready to go. If, like me, you have an ffmpeg folder in a different version, just type the name of that player followed by gut (for me, I type r:).

    Is ProRes compatible with Windows?

After downloading the ProRes codec with Windows, you can play ProRes RAW as ProRes RAW HQ video files in all compatible applications on a PC running Windows 10 64-bit. To be precise, Windows applications that can open videos with the ProRes codec: Adobe After Effects. Adobe Premier Pro.

Now we need to navigate to the ffmpeg folder. If you created it in a subdirectory of your player, be sure to cd ffmpeg and your custom view should update to read something like C:ffmpeg>. Now you can’t wait to get the conversion command. To convert your precious file, type:

How do I convert to Windows ProRes?

Step 1: Click the Add Files icon and import the ProRes media file.Step 2 Select a format compatible with Windows.Step 3 Click Convert.

    ffmpeg -i Path/To/File/ToBeConverted.-vcodec mov prores -profile:v 2 -an Path/To/New/

    What we really do

Can you use ProRes raw on PC?

Support for ProRes RAW on Windows requires the user to install most Apple ProRes RAW decoders. The ProRes RAW decoder is NOT recognized or supported by Adobe and is clearly subject to the Apple Terms of Service.

This is a bit confusing, sowhat let’s see who is not working with imaginary file working in R:"Va_Slims"

The first part of the command (ffmpeg) clearly states which ffmpeg encoder is the executable we recently placed in our folder. This is what the coding is actually trying to do, the following information is considered instructions telling ffmpeg what to change, what to write and how to write it, and where to store that output.

-i Path/To/File/ToBeConverted. Moves the file that encodes the person in ProRes. In our example file, part of the command will be ffmpeg -i R:/"Va Slims"/COLOR/ Notice how I use “Va Slims” in quotes. This may be because the directory (named Va Slims) has a space in its or company name and requires the quotes to point directly to the location of a single file (rather than break the command).

Middle impact is at the core of what we do. I think it’s simple because it lists many related variables that can be used. After that we want to focus on what ffmpeg hastells it to encode as the path to ProRes and what type of ProRes it should encode.

We first teach ffmpeg to encode in ProRes with the following command: -vcodec we have prores

Next, we need to define the ProRes quality we are going to encode. By default, 3 options are available in Encoder: Proxy, LT, Expected (422) and HQ (422). There will technically also be a fix for encoding on the way to 4444, but the implementation is often considered buggy and for the purposes of this tutorial, we won’t take the option into account. Each of these two parameters is determined by a mathematical value. Proxy is 0, LT is usually 1, 422 is 2, and HQ is 3. The command to teach ffmpeg to encode to the required format is -profile:v # where individuals use the # icon Replace with the most important output profile you want (0-3).

If we try to encode our imaginary ProRes HQ, normally all our inputs will look like this: ffmpeg - my husband and me R:/"Va Slims"/COLOR/ - vcodec prores - profile: v3

People all over the world now have to determine what we publish in the database. The format is certainly very similar to the one we enter asNo input, except we usually replace
